Studying your matric during a global pandemic was not an easy task, but Progress Comprehensive School’s matric 2020 Top Achiever, Lehlohonolo Lesiba still managed to clinch an impressive five distinctions on his NSC examinations. The 18-year-old attributed his success to a few set of guidelines he followed. The most important amongst them, he said, was being realistic about his goals.

“You have to know what you want and what it will take to get there. People will set unrealistic goals; like if you’re not good at Mathematics, you can’t just suddenly set a goal to achieve 80%. But you can work up to that point. Be honest about where you are and improve yourself. Gradually, the marks will improve as well,” said Lesiba.

Although he emphasised the point of setting realistic standards, Lesiba also urged learners to avoid being discouraged by poor marks.

“If you don’t get the marks you wanted, that shouldn’t put you down. Go back to the drawing and see where you went wrong. Ask Teaches to help you. Too many people would say ‘this teacher doesn’t like me or that teacher is this’. All teachers at the school are there to help you – reach out to them for help and about things you don’t understand,” added Lesiba.

As equally important as setting goals, is setting up a personal routine. During his matric year, Lesiba set up his study routine.

“So for me, it was coming back from school around 3 pm, do my chores and whatever I needed to do, then I would sleep. I would wake up very early the next day – around midnight and just study until sunrise. That was my daily routine. It’s important to understand that this was a routine that worked for me. You have to create one that will work for you,” he said.

With his five distinctions, Lesiba was one of the best performing learners from the matric class 2020 around Soweto schools. He only narrowly missed out on a full 7 distinctions, achieving 77% for Physical Sciences and 74% for Xitsonga Home Language respectively. He intends to study Astronomy and Astrophysics at Wits University.
