Congregants arrested after attacking JMPD officers

Spectators must have witnessed a brawl when several believers, including the church pastor, were arrested for public violence, assault, and malicious property damage.

The group of believers were also nabbed for contravening the disaster management act. The Communications Officer for the JMPD Wayne Minnaar explained that the apparent service on 28 February had more than 2 000 people in attendance.

Minnaar said, “When our female superintendent, one female inspector, and five officers had to attend to a noise from the church service in Midway, the officers were met and surrounded by a group of aggressive church male members.”

Minnaar explained that the men went on to the JMPD vehicles till the officers had to use pepper fog to disperse them and called for backup. “Rubber bullets had to be used to disperse the group who damaged the JMPD Patrol cars and injured two officers,” Minnaar said.

One officer was taken to Milpark Hospital while two church members also got injured and one had to be taken to Baragwanath Hospital.
