210 bursaries up are up for grabs

While the bursaries are set for the 2021 academic year, it important to note that bursaries are renewable yearly based on the student’s academic performance.

Thousands of matriculants collected their results on Tuesday and will be hopeful of claiming a spot at a tertiary institution. For many, however, a new battle begins – getting funding for tertiary studies. The National Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) does offer assistance but it cannot support the overwhelming number of applicants.

Gift Mangwane who got his results on Tuesday morning said he was pleased that he passed but was still worried about getting funding.
“Before today, I’ve been focused on getting my results – I had not thought much about finances and all that. Now that I’ve seen my results, I’m happy but a bit worried about funding. I will send some applications in the next few days and see how things go,” he said.

Many matriculants would relate to Mangwane’s dilemma, and for these reasons, Gibela is offering 210 bursaries to deserving applicants. The bursaries will be divided into two categories: 150 bursaries will be for study at technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, while 60 bursaries will be for study at universities and universities of technology.

“Gibela is doing its part to ensure South Africa meets its aim, set out in the National Development Plan, of reducing and even eliminating inequality and poverty. We believe there is no better way to do this than through education and skills training,” said Gibela’s corporate services executive, Dr. Buyiswa Mncono-Liwani.
