The Caitlin Douman Foundation finds a new home

The Caitlin Douman Foundation is working to be the change by creating awareness and support for people with disabilities in Eldorado Park and surrounding areas.

The Caitlin Douman Foundation is working to be the change by creating awareness and support for people with disabilities in Eldorado Park and surrounding areas.
The Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) has recently found their home in Kremetart Avenue, in Eldorado Park, extension 3.

Charis Pretorius, the director, and co-founder of the foundation shared that they have been blessed by Eldomart Investments headed up by Yasien Mohamed who allowed them to use the property as a center to treat and assist individuals with disabilities.

The team has already started with renovations on the property.
“Our children have to go to hospitals to receive their treatments such as physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy and during these Covid-19, it isn’t always safe. We are bringing the services to them in Eldorado Park.”

“We are also looking at bringing in hyperbaric oxygen therapy which improves the lives of people living with disabilities and also services for parents. A lot of the parents that we have are not as informed as they should be on their child’s disability and also it’s about educating and creating awareness on disability in our community,” said Pretorius.

Marcelle Daniels, president, and co-founder of the foundation said that she is quite excited about where their foundation is going. “This is just a stepping stone for what we have envisioned for the foundation. It’s not just for Eldorado Park but the greater Eldorado Park including Lenasia, Ennerdale, and Orange Farm as well. We are hoping to be operational by March 1, however, it is dependent on sponsorships.”

According to Pretorius, the services that the foundation will be rendering will be free and all of the people will be working voluntarily at the center.

The foundation has no corporate sponsors and is functioning solely on donations and needs approximately R60 000 to get all the items that they need to make the property functional and wheelchair friendly. The Caitlin Douman Foundation would like to thank everyone for their support and they are asking for more support from the community, whether it’s financial or through rendering service to get the centre started.

The Caitlin Douman Foundation would like to have containers at the back of the yard for the different therapy sessions that they will be offering.

Daniels concluded the interview by sharing some of their plans; “We would like to bring in Early Childhood Development (ECD) because our children need stimulation, a lot of what we find in the community is that people don’t have the funds to send their children to a school outside of Eldorado Park. The school fees can be R800 a month but the transport costs over R1000 and the disability grant does not cover that. We would like to bring ECD in so that our children can get to the quality of life that they need.”
