Eldos swimming coach Imaan Adams reflects on her swimming journey

Born and raised in Eldorado Park , Imaan Adams started swimming at the age of three-years-old.

Born and raised in Eldorado Park , Imaan Adams started swimming at the age of three-years-old. According to Adams, she started swimming at a swimming school in Mondeor and then went on to swim for her primary school which led her to represent the central Gauteng district at the age of ten.

At fourteen-years-old she then qualified for nationals. “Swimming became a bit hectic in high school because I was swimming for the school and a club. I had morning training and then school and then training after school, so I stopped. I then started playing netball and got selected for the district team and in Garde 12, I made the first team and got full colours in netball.

“After school, I never thought of continuing my swimming career but I always knew that I would end up in the sports industry. I went to the University of Johannesburg where I studied Sport Psychology and got my degree,” said Adams.

Back in 2017, the swim school which Adams swam at approached her and offered her a coaching job while she was still studying. After working and graduating, she then took a gap year which allowed her to realise her passion for working with children.

“In 2019 I got an interview at Kiddies Aqua and I just loved how they coached there so I got the job. My long-term goal is to start my swimming club in Eldorado Park. I would like it to be an indoor facility so that in winter we can still operate.

“I want to start in our community because our people think that swimming is just a sport but it is a life skill, I believe that swimming is a true-life saver. I want to get the children off the streets and I feel like we have a lot of potentials here in Eldorado Park. If swimming was prevalent in our community 20 years ago, as it was in other communities, we may not be facing the vandalism currently taking place at our public pool facilities,” shared Adams.

The swimming coach explained that her degree in sports psychology gives her an advantage because it helps her with her interactions with the children at the swimming school.

“I would like to raise awareness of the importance of swimming as a life skill and as a sport. Drowning happens so fast that is why I think people need to make swimming a priority,” concluded Adams. You can follow the swimming coach on Facebook: Imaan Adams.
