Others suffer from seeing the water creep in their houses and destroy their furniture worth up to fortunes of investments.

The Spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, Synock Matobako (EMS) confirmed that a few houses flooded in Lenasia and Protea Glen due to sewer and desert drain blockages.

He said, “Land invasion does not have waste management, so people dispose of their rubbish irresponsibly, and when it rains the rain carries the trash to the drains and causes clogs and blockages.”

Ayanda Allaman from Protea Glen Ext 26 expressed dismay over the natural situation, he said, “We have incurred damages worth fortunes because of the floods. We don’t even know who to call into account. ”

Matobako explained that in Lenasia, The Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) had already gone to clear the waste and unblock the bridge as well as in Klipspruit West.

Low Slope Areas: The EMS had a message for the people, Matobako said, “Whenever it heavily rains, the people with houses situated in low slope areas must be vigilant of the flooding waters. If their houses flood, they would rather abandon them and call the EMS.

Motorists: When driving and a storm starts, never try to drive through floods. Switch on headlights and reduce speed because the slope would be very slippery. Keep safe following distance. Matobako said, “Not keeping safe following distance has caused many road accidents during the storm because people fail to comply.”

Rather lose replaceable property than life. Let’s all be responsible.
