Children, grandchildren, cousins, relatives and siblings are fighting for ownership of houses according to the Community Policing Forum (CPF).
CPF chairperson, Teddy Makgale said there are far too many cases of people claiming ownership of a family house and thereafter fighting for it.
He said there are far too many people who are fighting for houses and that families end up fighting, being in and out of the police station or the courts.
“Our office deals with community issues and we refer issues to relevant offices.
“We do not have the powers to sort out housing issues.
“Too many people come to us expecting that we will help get them ownership of a house or help kick someone out, we do not do that.”
The CPF is concerned and advises original owners of the houses to sort out documents of their houses and who they want to take responsibility of the house or even ownership.
“Owners of the house often die or become frail and are unable to sort the issue of the house.
“We advise the community to seek advice at the housing department.”
Makgale said family members are kicking each other out with claims that the house is theirs while some use fraudulent documents to obtain ownership and even sell the house.
“This issue is serious.
“Family members are kicked out, it is sad.”
