“A place for Soweto by Soweto” is how founder co-founder Tshepo Moeti described his new restaurant at the heart of Soweto, in Pimville.

The restaurant, which was founded last year by Tshepo Moeti, Muzi Kone, and Seneolo Phito, will be celebrating its 1st birthday this Sunday. It has not only provided a Jozi- like experience with good food but perhaps, more importantly, has employed the Soweto youth.

“Once my partners got on board, the focus was always on black excellence. To hire locals. We looked at all the places where we could open, and realized we wanted something that would benefit the youth of Soweto. We know our youth unemployment is one of the highest in the world, add that to the covid pandemic and it’s a serious problem. So we are proud and happy to give back to Sowetan youth,” Moeti told Soweto Urban.

The benefit of this is exponential: The restaurant has also benefited other businesses in the area. “for one thing, There’s a nearby car wash by the restaurant. When people come to the restaurant they normally have their cars washed there, so, in a way Onions&all has brought that boost of customers. ”

Interestingly Onions&all is unlike any other, with a menu that is truly Sowetan, in the literal sense. It features food that is named after Soweto’s historical landmarks. some of the restaurant’s best meals include The Soweto Towers, Soweto Highway, and, for those in doubt, the Zone1 comes highly recommended.

“We wanted meals that would celebrate i-Kasi, the lady who did the design concept for did an amazing job using landmarks for our design, and we thought let’s incorporate this into our meals as well and we’ve received such a great response from people.”

For those who haven’t been to Onions&all, Tshepo provided a sneak peek, “That lifestyle you get from Maboneng or in town, we’re bringing it home to Soweto, we’re saying ‘you don’t have to drive out, you can have a classy and great experience here in Soweto,” he said Sunday’s celebration, Tshepo promises a good time after what has been, to say the least, a shaky year.

“it’s going to be a great vibe. We’ve all hard year, lets come out and have a good time celebrating something truly Sowetan. We also want to thank the people of Soweto who’ve shown us support and great support, we’re humbled and will keep growing Soweto together,” he said.
