Miss Soweto finalists Phumla Twala(21) wants to prioritise children’s safety

Meet Phumla Twala, Miss Soweto 2020 Top 20 finalist.

Miss Soweto has announced the top 20 women who will be vying for the title of Miss Soweto 2020, and Naledi’s very own Phumla Twala is within. The 21-year-old Marketing Management student at Intec College says that she unleashed her career as a beauty queen when crowned second runner-up for Miss Goodwill SA 2017 just after high school.

Twala says that she is very proud to be in the Top 20 of this prestigious pageant as it will be a breakthrough for her.

” I am thankful for what Miss Soweto is doing for young women in Soweto. It is going to be a breakthrough for me simply because it’s my 3rd time entering this year. It will also boost my confidence and make my family proud,” Twala said.

To win this pageant, Twala said she is going to be positive, work hard, and believe in herself throughout the competition.

” And if I win, one of my main goals is to donate clothes to the needy and bring along local designers to design the most breathtaking dresses for Matrics who can’t afford. Some learners are doing well academically but cannot afford their dream dresses, so my ultimate goal is to assist them, she said.

“I turn to have a soft spot for kids, and as we all know now that they kidnapped. I’m planning to start The Kidpower program that teaches kids how to take charge of their safety. If someone approaches them and they feel threatened, they should run away. If they can’t, the instructor will give the instruction and tips on how to protect themselves or react if that scenario happens,” she added.

Asked which of the previous Miss Soweto inspired her, Twala said that Miss Soweto 2017, who has also made it to the Top 10 of prestigious Miss SA, Busisiwe Mmotla inspires her. Mmotla, who is the only one representing Soweto at this year’s Miss SA, is a true inspiration as she is a Miss Soweto product.

“My favorite former Miss Soweto would be Miss Soweto 2017, Busisiwe Mmotla. She truly served her reign with a pure heart and determination. She even managed to make a change in her community by creating a library for one of the needy schools in Emndeni. Now with her hard work and believing in herself, she managed to make it to the top of the prestigious Miss SA,” she said.

Sponsored by White Star, the pageant has been and continues to be a platform for young women to realize their dreams in pageantry.
