Two coaches set to start a Netball League in Eldorado Park

The coaches explained that the programme is an after-school programme where they don’t only focus on the sport but also address social issues.

It all goes back to a Primary School connection with Netball where Jennifer Meyer and Andrea Morgan’s friendship started. The two friends who are now coaches of the netball teams under the Midas Sports Development are looking to start a Netball League in Eldorado Park. Meyer who is also the manager of the club shared that they have four teams: U18, U17, U15, and U8.

“We started our netball club last year June 16, we were on our own so we saw Midas Sports Development Academy and we joined them in September,” said Meyer.

Coach Morgan added: “My aim is to start our own netball league in Eldorado Park, the lockdown has slowed things down for us because we wanted to go and form clubs throughout Eldorado Park so that we can all play against each other.

“We want to clean up Eldorado Park. We would like to work with High Schools because there is netball in primary schools but when we get to High Schools, we see how the sport falls away, so we want to bring netball back into our high schools and change the young girls’ mindsets.”

The coaches explained that the programme is an after-school programme where they don’t only focus on the sport but also address social issues.

“When the young girls enter High School, many of the girls focus on boyfriends, drinking alcohol, smoking and this is the reason why we want to bring sports back into high schools so that we can keep the youth busy with positive stuff, the teenage pregnancy will fall, and drug abuse will fall.

“Most of our players want to play at school as well but then you find that the teachers are not serious. So, we want to help bring netball back. We also have boys on our team and we fight for our boys because when we have games, the other teams never want our boys to play so we would like to start boy teams.

“Netball is a unisex sport, just like soccer,” said Meyer.

Captain of the U17 team, Bernidene Davids shared: “I started playing netball at the age of 10 in primary school. Being a captain isn’t easy, it’s about taking responsibility and also instilling discipline, and it’s about helping others.

“In our community, it isn’t easy for us so we are playing the sport so that we can stay away from teenage pregnancy, drugs, and alcohol.

“I would like to complete school, further my studies in teaching and then I would like to also coach my own teams one day.”

Coach Morgan concluded: “We would like for each extension to have a netball team, so we asking residents who are interested in starting the teams to contact us, and then we can work together to build our own league in Eldorado Park.”
