Residents happy with the newly renovated Diepkloof Zone 1 tennis court

Local outdoor gyms thrive since popular gyms and fitness centers are currently closed under lockdown regulations.

Its previous state only invited criminal activities and its purpose, of accomodating sporting activities, was almost forgotten. The Diepkloof Zone 1 Tennis Court has been renovated and while maintaining social distancing rules, sporting activities are brought back to life.

The renovations were made possible by the City of Joburg. The court, which is currently accomodating, netball, basketball, tennis as well as aerobics could be a catalyst for local gyms to thrive since popular gyms and fitness centers are closed due to the Pandemic and fitness enthusiasts missing the gym, have been opting for these local outdoor ones.

Diepkloof Body and Fitness Gym, one of the oldest local gyms, which has been taking place at the Diepkloof Hall in Zone 1, also temporarily moved to the tennis court since they can no longer enjoy gym and aerobics at the hall.

“Remember, our main aim is to keep people healthy and fit and we couldn’t let the global pandemic stop us from doing that, so we wanted to continue with our fitness activities and this facility was the best option,”  said Boy-boy Mamatho of Diepkloof Body and Fitness Gym.

Another local gym that has been utilizing the facility even before the renovations, Gym Addicts gym, sims to be growing.

Established by Nqobile Zwane in 2017 the gym has been running for free.

Fitness trainers now utilising the newly refurbished court.

“The tennis court is a dream come true for the community and we would like to thank the City of Joburg for making it possible and ward 28 Councilor, Peter Ndou for allowing us the opportunity as the community of Diepkloof.

“With all these activities happening here we will be able to keep kids away from the streets,” said Zwane.

The tennis court has social Workers’ offices in the same yard, which makes it a safe environment for kids.
