#LiberateUs continues with the fight against GBV

The young activists embarked on a march against GBV, starting at Ndofaya Mall in Meadowlands then proceed to Vilakazi Street in Orlando West.

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) continues to be a profound and widespread problem in South Africa, and organisations across the country have been coming together, forming campaigns with the hope of winning the battle against GBV.

A group of young activists from all walks of the country, victims, and non-victims, males and females established a movement called #LiberateUs, a movement aimed at fighting GBV and standing up for all the victims in their communities.

On Saturday, June 18, they embarked on a march against GBV, starting at Ndofaya Mall in Meadowlands then proceed to Vilakazi Street in Orlando West.

“We felt the need to embark on this march because we wanted to raise awareness on the matter of GBV as the number seems to be rapidly increasing and people seemed to care only when it’s personal or unless the case becomes popular and is all over the media,” said Ramaesela Maja, a founder and lead coordinator of the movement.

“We are tired of men taking away our dignity, so today we have embarked on this march to say enough with GBV.

“We want to say to men, a No is a No, the word no is a complete sentence if I say no, you should respect that,” said Vivian Mokubung another founder and lead coordinator.

These groups of young people are saying enough is enough.

Like all the other activists, this group of young people is hoping for an urgent and effective intervention by the government on the matter.

“Women have become a target and are being killed by men every day therefore, fear amongst women and children has reached a saturated point that women do not feel safe in and outside their homes anymore because we do not know who is next. It is evident that South Africa has become one of the most unsafe societies in the world it’s like men have declared a war against women,” said Maja.

The following are their list of URGENT demands to present to the president of South Africa, President CM Ramaphosa to implement:

a) Section two (Bill Of Rights) of the Constitution of the Republic to be revised and amended with immediate effect.

b) Perpetrators to be suspended with immediate effect.

c) When found guilty, for taking a life, the perpetrator must serve a life sentence with no bail option.

The March started around 10 am in Meadowlands.

“The #LiberateUs movement declares that they can no longer pay their taxes as citizens of this country to give criminals three square meals per day, hospital and medical expenses as well as education opportunities while they have deprived all of that to another person and denied children the love from their mothers,” Maja said.

“We, therefore, propose that the President with powers vested in him by the Constitution of the Republic of the Constitution and the National Assembly grants this petition urgent and necessary attention it deserves and amends the constitution as suggested in (a) of the petition with immediate effect,” she concluded.
