Meadowlands family in need of help after fire claimed the lives of their grandmother and great-granddaughter

Details surrounding how the fire started still not confirmed.

A dark cloud has befallen the Mokone family in Meadowlands Zone 1. On Saturday their house was engulfed in flames and cut short the life of 68 years old Agnes Mokone and 5 years old great-granddaughter Tshireletso with the same surname.

Tsholofelo Mokone said on the day the tragic incident happened the family went to sleep without electricity and allegedly said when the power came back the house was on fire but they are not sure what really triggered the fire.

She further explained that both the deceased were sleeping on the bedroom and her three cousins who sustained injuries were sleeping in the dining room area.

Tsholofelo alluded that they were all fast asleep hence they could not feel that the house was on fire.

Tsholofelo said her deaf cousin Omphile woke up first and noticed the fire and she woke the ones who were sleeping with him and they tried knocking on the grandmother’s room and ran out because there was a lot of smoke in the house.

“One of my cousins tried waking my grandmother and she was responding but the little one had already passed on,” she alluded.

Tsholofelo could not hold her tears as she explained how her grandmother tried to crawl out of the room but couldn’t reach the outside when she collapsed at the door.

Tsholofelo said by that time the community was hands-on trying to extinguish the fire.

“Paramedics took them out and tried resuscitating them but it was already late they had already passed on,” explained emotional Tsholofelo.

Tsholofelo extended her gratitude to the community for their help and for their support.

She said after posting on social media asking for assistance they have been receiving positive feedback. Tsholofelo is grateful to all the people who support and continue to support them during this trialing time.

According to the Gauteng Emergency Services spokesperson  Nana Radebe when they arrived at the scene the community had already extinguished the fire and the course of the fire could not be determined.

The family is in dire need of clothes, blankets, food, and essential valuables that one might think of.
