Ithemba la bantwana feeding scheme in Kliptown gives back

The Ithemba la bantwana feeding scheme, a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) based in Kliptown recently held its annual lunch event for the elderly in Kliptown, with special attention to women in the community because of Women’s Month.

The elderly were treated to a warm lunch and received blankets. A further 200 plates of food were served to the children of Kliptown.

“The children from our community are the reason why this feeding scheme was started,” said Anne Rosenberg, who is one of the co-founders of the feeding scheme.

“As everyone knows, Kliptown is a poverty-stricken community but what most do not realise is that it’s only getting worse.

“Majority of the families living here do not even have enough money to feed their families. It heartbreaking having to witness our children go and come from school hungry, so with them in mind, we cook to fill their tummies,” she added.

Brandon Padiachi, who is also one of the co-founders said that the team simply feeds to see a smile on the children’s faces. “At the moment, because we do not have many sponsors, we are only able to feed the community once a week.

We would like to do it at least three times,” said Padiachi. Meloudene Rosenberg, who is part of the feeding scheme said that it’s not only children who flood their gates for a plate of food. “Young adults and even our elderly residents come to us. We food over 200 residents,” said Rosenberg.

When asked about the goals they have for the NPO, the team said that they are passionate about children, sport and skill development. “In the long run, we would like to form our sports team and create programmes that will uplift our youth,” said Rosenberg.

Padiachi said that the recent lunch for the elderly would not have been possible without the contributions from sponsors.

“A big thank you to Kliptown Salvation Tabernacle and Pastor Ricardo. Thank you to councillor Peter Rafferty and all who made this day special to the elderly of Kliptown,” said Padiachi.

“We are still in need of sponsorship and donations, as we feed close to 300 needy residents every week. If anybody out there is willing to help contact us on 081 813 5772,” Padiachi concluded.
