Nothing beats a hot tasty bowl of soup in the cold winters. Many have their own preferences, there are people who do not like soup but to the ones who do, they have a variety of soups that they can choose from.

Whether you making it, buying it or a loved one is making it, there is always a family story behind the recipe of the soup. But where does soup originate from?

According to the website: https://www.foodtimeline.org, food historians tell us the history of soup is probably as old as the history of cooking. ‘The act of combining various ingredients in a large pot to create a nutritious, filling, easily digested, simple to serve food was inevitable.

This made it the perfect choice for both sedentary and travelling cultures, rich and poor, healthy people and invalids. Soup evolved according to local ingredients and tastes.’

Rustic Chef on their Wordpress account defines the term ‘soup’, according to ‘An A-Z of Food and Drink by John Ayto, which states that the main idea of the word soup comes from ‘soaking’.

Ayto states that soup goes back to an unrecorded post-classical Latin verb suppare soak’, which was borrowed from the same prehistoric German root (sup-) as produced in English sup and supper.

From it was derived the noun suppa, which passed into Old French as soupe.

Today, there are so many soups ranging from vegetable soups such as butternut soup, thick vegetable soup, cabbage soup, cream mushroom and so on, there is also the famous chicken noodle soup, beef soup, seafood soup and the list goes on.
