Advocacy in Riverlea about domestic violence

Domestic violence explained by FAMSA, UJ social worker and the Agnes Ferley Foundation.

The partnership between FAMSA’s Helping Hands, the Agnes Ferley Foundation and social work students from the University of Johannesburg’s(UJ)brought a domestic violence programme to the community of Riverlea.

The four-day programme will be focusing on raising awareness of domestic violence and counselling residents who are victims to it.

According to Karabo Sibinda, a social work student, the programme is part of his practicals but himself and his colleague noticed that there are many victims of domestic violence in the community of Riverlea and felt that it is important to have such a programme.

The attendees were visited by Constable Phumi Kraai from the Langlaagte police station and she spoke about bullying and how it can be linked to domestic violence.

The children who attended were given the opportunity to sign up for counselling and Milly Harris from Helping Hands acted out a few scenes to show the different types of scenarios that can come from domestic violence.

The group will be at the Riverlea Recreation Centre from 9 am to 12 pm until Friday and then next week Monday and Tuesday they will be having a programme on substance abuse to help residents who are facing challenges in that social ill.
