Eldorado Park stadium vandalised

'Our stadium is a target for crime' - Phillip Ratson

An Extension Nine resident, Phillip Ratson and Christopher Gayta who is the sports officer at the Eldorado Park stadium have expressed their concerns about the state of the community stadium.

According to Gayta the stadium has deteriorated drastically over the last few months.

“It seems the stadium is now a hot spot of crime. Night time at the stadium is the worst, it has become a breathing ground for residents to smoke their drugs, vandalise and steal from the facility,” said Gayta.

Both Ratson and Gayta confimed that in recent incidents, the security office has broken into leaving only a desk that was destroyed by burglars.

“The windows and office door has been broken leaving the room open to the public. I’m shocked when I enter the room because all you can see are used condoms lying on the floor,” said Ratson.

Gayta confirmed that the newly built toilets on the premises have been broken into and vandalised. The basin’s in the bathroom have been destroyed.

“The taps have been stolen and because they also removed the copper from the pipes the bathroom was left flooded,” said Gayta.

Just last year, the caretaker at the stadium, Phillip Davis, spoke out about the vandalism and urged the community to take responsibility in maintaining rather than destroying the facility.

“Not only has the fence been stolen but now criminals are working their way inwards, targeting offices and locked rooms on the premises. The night shift security guards said that they often fear for their lives and co=cannot prevent the vandalism as they are unarmed.
