Beyond the dream

Our youth need to set their sights higher than just jobs.

Grade Nine learners at Silver Oaks Secondary School were afforded the opportunity to listen to successful graduates encourage them about their future. Melvarene Theron, who is a lawyer and model, said that she assessed her community and identified the need to inspire the youth of Eldorado Park.

“I wanted to talk to them about the importance of following through with a career that one is passionate about. It’s not just about having a job, but having a career one can be proud of,” said Theron.

The law graduate took it upon herself to host her friends, who are all graduates and students at various universities.

“I spoke to my friends and we all agreed that we would commit ourselves to change the mindsets of the youth. The plan is to instill a mindset that a career is more beneficial than just having a job. We want to encourage the youth to study hard so they can go into the career of their dreams,” said Theron.

The graduates and students who have committed themselves to encourage the youth are; attorney Reagan Re, Deolene Meko and Manini, both of whom are computer science students and mining engineering student, Noluthando Sikhosana.

Together the group said they plan to visit a number schools in Eldorado Park to host sessions where career options will be discussed.

Educators at the school said they were grateful to the group of graduates and students who have taken the time to speak to the learners. Due to exams, not all the students were able to listen to the guest speakers.

“Even though we could not reach as many students as we would have liked, we plan to come back to the school at a later stage. Ideally, we’d like to talk to the Grade 11s, so they can be mentally prepared for matric,” said Theron.
