Working together to ensure Eldos flourishes
The CWP is a government programme which was established to provide employment in communities.
Members of the Eldorado Park Community Work Programme (CWP) have been hard at work trying to give back to the community. Last week, CWP members committed themselves to repair potholes in the streets leading to the Don Mateman Civic Centre.
Ashley Fillies, who is the CWP site supervisor, said that the streets in Eldorado Park are filled with potholes and because of this, cars are being damaged.
“As the CWP we have taken it upon ourselves to at least try to cover up these potholes even though we don’t have the resources. We are community workers, we cannot sit and do nothing about this,” he said.
Fillies said his team has decided to fill the holes with sand. He said, “We know that this is obviously not a permanent solution because once the rainy season starts, the holes will form again but for now, the holes are covered and drivers don’t have to worry about their tyres being damaged.”
According to Fillies, the reason the CWP have taken matters into their own hands is that the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) have not repaired the potholes in a while.
“These holes have been here for too long. So, for now, the sand will have to do,” he said.
The CWP is a government programme which was established to provide employment in communities. The programme targets unemployed individuals and provides them with a basic level income so that they can provide for their families in a dignified way.
The CWP has been hard at work ensuring the community is taken care of and they can be seen working in the community on a daily basis in their orange overalls. They also cleaned up the open veld opposite the Don Mateman Civic Centre in Extension Six.
“Today we also made sure to clean up and remove rubble close to the drains so water can enter freely. We are committed to this community and we know that if we persist and work together, our community can flourish,” said Fillies.
