Only steel frames remain after a catastrophic fire.

Eight buses were set alight at the Metro bus depot in Eldorado Park Extension six yesterday morning. According to eyewitnesses, two young men were seen making a fire in a veld close to the depot.

“The veld fire started off as being minor but before we knew it, the fire spread to the buses. We watched the buses catch fire one by one,” said an eyewitness.

Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) from Lawley and Orange Farm arrived with a fire engine almost an hour later. When they arrived, it was too late as all eight buses were burnt beyond recognition, with only their steel frames remaining.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said in a statement that the fire engines were responding to another incident, hence the late arrival.

“We can confirm that we responded to a fire incident in Eldos which involved eight buses. The incident occurred next to the Eldorado Park Police Station. There were no injuries which were reported and the cause of the fire is still subject to investigations,” he said.

Goodwill Shivuri, Metro bus communications spokesperson, said that the incident was extremely disturbing to see and confirmed that the buses were indeed on the company’s asset register.

“It is a huge loss for us and will cost us millions to replace the destroyed buses,” said Shivuri.
