Hijacking safety tips from the Langlaagte police station

Basic hijacking safety tips.

Constable Phumi Kraai from the Langlaagte Police Station would like to appeal to the motorists to be more vigilant as it has become apparent that in specific areas of Langlaagte there has been a recorded increase in cases of car-hijackings, mostly minibus taxis (Toyota Quantum) but bear in mind that any motor vehicle can be targeted, which is why the Langlaagte SAPS is issuing the following basic hijacking safety tips.

According to Kraai, you can reduce the risks of being hijacked by being vigilant at all times, ensure that all your vehicle mirrors are adjusted to give you an optimal all-round view of your surroundings.

Try to stop 5 meters behind the car in front of you and with your gear in first at a stop sign or traffic light- as it makes for an easier getaway if trouble arises. When approaching your driveway, be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles or persons and never pick up hitch-hikers.

When you are in an unfortunate hijacking situation always try to remain calm and do not attempt to show any signs of aggression, be observant without being noticeable about it and remember what is seen and done.

Find characteristics that may help you in identifying your attacker at a later stage and refrain from fighting back. When it comes to reporting a hijacking; always report any crime to the nearest police as soon as possible after it has happened or call 10111.

Remember to make notes immediately after the incident to ensure accurate and detailed information and description is given to the police, as accurate information ensures a prompt response.

Time and place of the incident, as well as the description of the area where the incident took place, is very important. If there was another vehicle used to assist the hijackers, you must give a detailed description such as the registration number, car model and the colour of that car. Be able to describe fully the hijacked vehicle (your vehicle) and remember the language used by the hijackers.

Members of the public with information on crime happening in their area are urged to phone the emergency number 10111 or the Crime Stop Number 0800 10111.

You can phone your nearest police station. The community of Sophiatown precinct can also phone Colonel Govender from the Sophiatown Police Station during office hours on 011 670 6388 with information on crime.

For those who live in the Langlaagte precinct, you can call the station number on 011 473 6200 extensions 18 and 19.
