Providing the flame to igniting girl power

Young women had the opportunity to submit their CVs and apply for jobs that were available on the day.

On June 29, adolescent girls and young women from the Greater Eldorado Park were invited to attend a workshop and interactive session which focused on empowering young women and teaching them to be self-reliant and how to solve problems efficiently and effectively.

The workshop was held at the Don Mateman Hall in Eldorado Park Extension Six, doors opened at 10 am and the workshop session finished at about 2 pm.

The event was sponsored by Girl Ignite Africa Academy and Johnson & Johnson. Lonwabo Lwesizwe, Come Back Misson and Pink Happiness were among the local stakeholders who came out in support of the event.

Lerato Motsamai, Girlignite Africa Academy founder, was in attendance and had the opportunity to share her life story with the young women. Motsamai emphasised that self-resilience is necessary in order to succeed.

“There is a breakthrough waiting for each and every one of you. You just have to keep fighting and pushing back. Life is tough, but so are you,” she said.

Motsamai encouraged the young women to follow their dreams and create vision boards to help make their dreams a reality, “In order to know where you want to go, you need to see it first.

“Write down your goals, cut out pictures of the car you want to drive, or the house you want to live in. Your dreams become realities only if you visualise and bring them to life. Think, plan and believe,” she said.

Girl Ignite Africa Academy is a registered non-profit organisation that runs beyond the classroom, a 21st-century empowerment programme that teaches servant leadership, entrepreneurship and maths to high school girls from low-income communities in Johannesburg and was founded between 2013 and 2014 by social entrepreneur, Lerato Motsamai.

“Our mission at the academy seeks to enhance the economic productivity of the African girl child by improving her business, academic and life skills,” said Motsamai.

The young women had the opportunity to submit their CVs and apply for jobs that were available on the day.

Chantel Molele, the marketing and sponsor coordinator for Come Back Mission said, “We decided to have this event today because there are so many opportunities for girls in other areas but almost nothing for them in Eldorado Park.

“We want to assist, even if it’s just to help get them onto a database for job opportunities. When Cheryl Pillay told us about this academy we all agreed that our girls needed to be afforded the opportunity,” said Molele.

She added that she was not sure where this would lead her and her team, but remained optimistic that it was a start.
