No law has changed for drinking alcohol and gambling in public

Sophiatown police release an official statement on consuming alcohol and gambling in public.

This serves as a notice to every resident living within the Sophiatown police precinct. On February 8, warrant officer and communications officer of Sophiatown police, Jerbes de Bruyn released an official statement out on consuming alcohol and gambling in public.

“The Sophiatown police would like to inform the public that it is still illegal to drink in public and to be under the influence of alcohol.

“The police have received numerous rumours that the law has changed regarding drinking in public and being under the influence of alcohol in public.

“We, therefore, wish to warn the public that this is absolutely not true and that it is still an offence to drink in public and being under the influence of alcohol in public and that the police will arrest any perpetrators in such regard as the law has not changed,” warns de Bruyn.

According to the communications officer, no person may consume liquor near any public place as well as in a motor vehicle driven in a public area. This includes places such as in the street, road, alley, park, market, shop, warehouse or public garage.

“The Sophiatown police view this in a very serious light and have a zero-tolerance attitude towards this matter. Furthermore, we would also like to send out a stern warning that it is also illegal to gamble in public and at unlicensed gambling places no matter the amount that is gambled,” concluded de Bruyn.
