La Masia FC made history in Soweto

The Westbury soccer giant La Masia ended 2017 with history being made.

The Westbury soccer giant La Masia ended 2017 with history being made. The young team which is almost 2 years have grabbed many supporters in the community when they were first seen when they won their first tournament in Roodepoort with the Donchecter Football Association.

Last year the team made it to the finals in the Steven Pienaar tournament but unfortunately, came second place to Codessa Football Club (FC) with the final score being 1-0.

The club managed to take home R50 000 for second place that day. They then won R12 000 the following weekend when they won the Donchester football tournament for the second time in a row.

According to Martin Bouwers who is the clubs’ photographer and runs the Westbury Footballers Page, the team was formed by former Argies players Baldwin Johnson, Corburn Woodington and Aiden Davids. La Masia is made up of many professional players who play amongst other skilled local players.

“Baldwin believed in getting the youngsters in that vibe of playing amongst professionals, the 45 minutes or 90 minutes, that experience you’ll never get again,” said Bouwers.

Before the year ended last year, the team played in the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge 2017 in Soweto.

La Masia made it all the way to the finals on December 29 and became the first team from Westbury to win the tournament.

The team walked away with R100 000 as champions of the Challenge. Last year, Bouwers shared that management of the club would like to start teams in all divisions that will play under the local football association, Jowest and then eventually make their way into playing in the PSL.

Nothing has been confirmed as to what the plans are for these football giants but one thing is for sure that they flying the Westbury quite high.
