Eldos: Not just a splash in the pool

Swimming in the Eldorado Park community has died out.

Swimming in the Eldorado Park community has died out, there are very few children out there that actually make an effort to learn how to swim. Swimming is a life skill that you’ll never know you need until the day arrives when the ability can save a life.

If you are not prepared for that day, you may not be able to save yourself or someone else.
However, every problem has a solution and swimming instructor Chrislynne du Plessis may just be able to provide a solution.

She said that swimming is her passion and that she was very proud to be a lifesaver. “To be able to teach and save someone’s life in the water and on land means something to me,” du Plessis said.

She works as an employee at the Eldorado Park Proper Swimming Pool in Goud Street and, according to her, is also one of the few employees at the swimming pool with the qualification and license to teach anyone how to swim.

“I used to take a few adults to the Ellis Park Swimming pool for free, with Patricia Wilcox, the ex-director of Swim South Africa and she helped to write the junior and senior lifeguard award manual,” she said.

Du Plessis learned how to swim at the very pool that she now works at. She said that she was taught by the late Anthony Baynes who gave them swimming lessons for free.

Because of the impact that Baynes had on her life, she has decided to continue his legacy by giving people the opportunity to learn how to swim, become lifeguards and revive interest in the sport in the area.

Participants will get an opportunity to receive the Life Guard Award which includes training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), anatomy and physiology, site-specific emergency care, water rescue skills and lifeguarding skills.

“I’m inviting all matriculants, girls, and boys, who will be looking for employment next year to join the programme,” Du Plessis added. This is all part of a build-up to a swimathon that will take place in December.
