Baby steps to quality education for Eldos ECDs

ECD fraternity assured that the City of Johannesburg is in full support of the promotion of early childhood development.

On August 19, a ground-breaking event took place in Eldorado Park. A first-of its-kind summit, themed “Baby Steps” was hosted by the Eldorado Park Early Childhood Development (ECD) Principals Forum.

In attendance were prominent guests like Member of the Mayoral Committee for Social Development (MMC), Dr Mpho Phalatse, and councillor Fazel Jaffer, speakers Dr Geeta Praag, Jaiyden Singh, Andrea Sciarappa, Anuschka Mouton, Adele Pullen, Dawn Vaax, and Deyana Thomas (founder-member of the forum) including parents, residents and officials from the teaching fraternity.

Each speaker highlighted the significance of providing children with quality basic education and the importance of adequate nutrition at ECD centres.

The summit also focused on the treatment of stress and anxiety in children at an early age, contagious diseases, perceptual development of the child and what Early Childhood Development entails.

MMC Mpho Phalatse assured the ECD fraternity that the City of Johannesburg is in full support of the promotion of Early Childhood Development and the proper development of children from ages six years old and younger in Eldorado Park.

He also congratulated the forum for raising the awareness of the importance of early childhood development and quality education.

Jaffer also pledged his support to the ECD fraternity in Eldorado Park.

Forum chairperson, Rozanne Swartbooi said, “The summit will be an annual event in the forum’s campaign to raise awareness about what early childhood development is all about.

“Crèches and ECD centres should not be seen as drop-off centres where parents can leave their children for the day but educational centres which provide quality education in the most important stage of the child’s development.”
