The combination between crime fighters and eco-living

In the spirit of Mandela Month

The Johannesburg Central Cluster celebrated their Mandela Day with the launch of a vegetable garden at the Langlaagte Police Station.

The theme for Mandela Day went around the fight against poverty and by doing so, communities and organisations needed to implement projects that will not only help for the 67 minutes but will sustain for years to come.

With the information above, the Mandela Day celebration at the Langlaagte Police Station was centred around the theme, “Nothing but the soil” because everyone is dependent on the soil in order to live.

The celebration started off with an opening by lieutenant colonel Siaga and then went on with an opening prayer by lieutenant colonel Lempe, who spoke about servanthood and how important it is to be servants.

Quoting Madiba, Rajin, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead. As we are making this garden, it must be important for the community and we must be proud that we going to look after it.”

Timothy Mabuza from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture gave a short demonstration on how to start a garden, talking about spacing between the plants and what else is required to sustain the garden.

Rajin hopes that the police station will look after the garden and that the garden will produce vegetables for the community as it is part of the fight against hunger.

He also added that this will encourage residents to plant their own vegetables and the police officers to start their own gardens and live off from it.

During the day 30 children from two day-care centres in Zamimpilo informal settlement were invited to have a meal which was cooked by the police officers at the police station.

The day was made possible by the joint effort of the Johannesburg Central Police Woman’s Network Forum, Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Johannesburg Central Men for Change and the crime prevention youth desk at the Langlaagte Police Station.

The final process of the day, watering the garden.
