National Child Protection Week is intended to raise awareness of the rights of children. This initiative aims to mobilise all sectors of society to care and protect children. This year it has been marked from May 28 to June 4.

Child Protection Week has given the community a chance to place children’s issues under the limelight, as well as highlighting successes and giving the community insight on the way forward.

The campaign is led by the Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini but it is imperative for all South Africans to play a role in protecting children and creating a safe and secure environment for them. The Bill of Rights in the Constitution clearly indicates that every child has the right to be protected from maltreatment, neglect, abuse or degradation.

Other legislation that has been drafted by South Africa in aid of protecting children is based on the United Convention on the Rights of the Child, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The Children’s Act proves that protections have been reinforced.

However, in contempt of these and other protections, many children still remain vulnerable to abuse, neglect as well as exploitation. As a community, we have a duty to do more in ensuring that the children of the community do not suffer or become victims of abuse.

We now have the opportunity to stop the cycle of violence, neglect, exploitation, and abuse of our children. By working together we can create an environment a community, where our children are safe and healthy, so in turn, they can thrive. In support of Child Protection Week, the government has called on us, as South Africans to wear green ribbons.

Besides wearing green ribbons, the Eldorado Park Community went out to all primary schools in support of this campaign, each day a few schools were visited by many. All of which include children, teenagers, community leaders as well as the police.

A group of children, with the help of the community, shouted out, “NO TO CHILD ABUSE – HOOT IF YOU CARE.” All who were present on Jun 1 stood at the robots, on the corner of the Main Road and the Golden Highway. Cars which passed the peaceful protest honked their hooters as they extended their support to the campaign.
