Retirement Village spruced up by volunteers

Neglected elders receive a helping hand.

On May 7, the C3 life changing ministries from Roodepoort visited the retirement village in Riverlea Extension 2 to render service and maintenance to the units.

According to Blodwen Roux a resident in Riverlea and a member of the church, the first-year bible school made it their mission to clean up the retirement village.

“We chose this village because there’s no help or there is but City Parks is still waiting for the budget in order to cut the grass.

Volunteers; Nomboniso Paile, Blodwen Roux, and Deliah Friedman with Schultz from the retirement village.

“So what we doing today is, we cutting the grass, cleaning up, there’s a fence on the one side that is laying and our guys will be lifting the fence up and stabilizing it as well, we will be giving a few food parcels out to the old people and we’ll also be cleaning a few units” said Roux.

Marlene Humphries the secretary of the retirement village said that their lights are not working in the complex but another organisation will be coming to fix it soon.

The village has 32 single units and 6 double units and each pensioner has to pay rent of R180, buy electricity for their prepared meters and still buy food all with their pension money.

Rabia Kathrada from the organisation “React” distributed food parcels to the elderly.

“We just want to give back to the community. The elderly people are so important and we really just want to uplift and give back to the elderly first because we know that sometimes they are neglected, but we also want to take this opportunity to sew back into their lives because these are the people that brought us up.

“We just want to appreciate our elderly because without them we will not be here,” said Pastor Anthony Friedman.

The ministry plans to do something at least once a month for the village like a soup kitchen or the distribution of food parcels just look after the old people.

They also urge the community to help out with donations or any services that can be rendered in order to make the village a safe and comfortable home for the elderly.
