The Goal shifting the posts to fight illiteracy

7.1% of SA population illiterate

All eyes are on the South African education system at present. Questions are asked about its effectiveness and whether millennials are adequately prepared for life after school.

According to the General Household Survey figures based on research conducted by Statistics South Africa in 2012, 7.1 per cent of the population are illiterate.

The Goal, a Non-Profit Organisation founded in 2006 by Randall Doubel and Hubert Tiger is making character and literacy education a priority in an innovative way.

The Goal aims to cast the spotlight on these deficiencies in the Eldorado Park in a language understood by most residents in this community-football.

With support from the Fédération Internationale de Football’s (FIFA) Football for Hope programme and the South African Football Association (SAFA) acting as a conduit through the FIFA 2010 Legacy Fund, they aim to raise awareness about literacy and getting more people to start reading.

The ability to read is one which is crucial in our everyday lives and provides access to vital information which may influence many decisions we make in our lives. To move a step closer to reducing the illiteracy numbers, The Goal will be having a book drive on March 15 where individuals or organisations can donate books to the group and its participants.

Preston Hartlief, Operations Manager at The Goal said,”  We will be hosting a Readathon on April 3rd which will be taking place at the Clubhouse.”

“Reading hour starts on April 3rd through June 1st. This is where religious organisations and home cells can get involved and have reading sessions at their respective meeting points.”

After school programmes are in place on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 3pm to 5pm at the Eldorado Park Stadium in Cumming Road, Extension Nine.
