Sama houses flooded due to blocked stormwater drains

Floods turned homes into mini swimming pools

The heavy rains experienced across the country have been seen as a blessing in some quarters, but Extension Two residents were furious when their homes were flooded due to the blocked storm-water drains.

The Eldorado Urban News reporter was contacted by an extremely irate Randell Abrahams on 3 January. Abrahams described waking up and having to wade through knee-deep water while trying to get ready for work.

Residents from the area, known as ‘Die Samas’ incurred heavy losses as a result.

Abrahams described appliances which had suffered water damage, vehicles which became waterlogged and foodstuff which had to be disposed of.

He said residents contacted councillor Fazel Jaffer and informed him of the situation, but were unhappy that the situation had not been dealt with in a timely manner.

Jaffer, in a telephone conversation with Eldorado Urban News, explained that the storm-water drains had become blocked, which led to water overflowing into homes.

He further advised that a team would be dispatched to attend to the matter.

The councillor and his team were out on 4 January, distributing food parcels to affected residents and were met by cheerful smiles from residents who maintained an optimistic outlook despite the floods.
