Youth remain a priority-Jaffer, Eldos

Councillor Fazel Jaffer's focus is on youth and service delivery in Eldorado Park

The festive season is officially over and the new year brings with it new challenges and targets to achieve. Councillor Fazel Jaffer is no exception as Eldorado Park residents look forward to tackling another year.

Jaffer appears revved up as he outlines plans for the first quarter of this year. He expresses his wish to conduct more public meetings on an Extension by Extension basis to keep residents informed and to engage with them on pressing issues within the community.

He says that the focus during this quarter will be to see the improvement of service delivery within Eldorado Park. He envisages engaging with the different municipal entities to realise this ambition.

The overgrown grass in certain areas, as well as street lights, have become an increasing concern to residents and he assures me that he will be engaging City Parks and City Power to ensure that they receive attention. Residents are asked to cease illegal dumping and requested to report any person engaging in this practice.

A recent survey by Jaffer has shown an increase in backyard dwellings in Eldorado Park which places pressure on the municipality’s waste management and –removal capacity as only one Pikitup bin is allocated per household. He advocates a return to the bin liner system which would make every household responsible for waste disposal and hopefully a decrease in illegal dumping.

Jaffer says that a total of 2401 Pikitup bins have been stolen in the past year, contributing directly to the increase in illegal dumping. This problem could soon be a thing of the past as youths from Phillipi street in Extension 4 have initiated a campaign to educate residents about the importance and the benefits of recycling.

Jaffer says, “The youth remain a priority and programmes such as these would kill two birds with one stone, providing employment and ridding the community of the unsightliness created by illegal dumping.”

He reminds Eldorado Park residents of the Local Government Ward Committee elections to be held on February 11 and urges all to come out in support of their preferred candidate.
