Acorn Foundation brings sustainability to Eldorado Park Primary, Eldos

Practical, sustainable solutions

Sustainability is a buzzword all too frequently thrown around in contemporary South Africa. The Acorn Foundation put this word into practice on October 11 at Eldorado Park Primary School in Fontein Street.

The Foundation approached the Environmentorz organisation to nominate a school to be the beneficiary of practical, sustainable solutions with regards to pupils’ daily nutritional intake.

Eldorado Park primary School was nominated, and work began in earnest when Roy Padayachee, Director at Klipstone Unitrans and his team started making bricks at the school in preparation for the kitchen to be built on Nelson Mandela Day earlier this year.

Acorn Foundation CEO, Rudy Joles said, “Acorn was founded to be a conduit between sponsorship and recipients.

A number of initiatives are to be rolled out at the school, including vitamin sachets to ensure that all pupils receive the recommended nutritional intake. Hepatitis B testing will be conducted over a two-year period and vegetable tunnels built to ensure sustainability of the project.

Former miss South Africa, Liesl Laurie, attended the proceedings and said, “Remember, you are not a product of your circumstances. Rather, you are the product of your choices.”

The school principal, Delyse Klaasen thank all the sponsors and added that the kitchen walls would be a symbol of sponsors’ compassion, love and generosity.

Klassen promised that the school would nurture the project through proper management to ensure  that the legacy remained intact.
