Strike calmed as roads open

MMC Dan Bovu addressed residents but they are still unhappy.

The protest that has been active since the early hours of this morning has calmed and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department has opened Main Reef and Maraisburg Road respectively.

This morning a large number of residents from the Zamimpillo Informal Settlement opposite the China Mall in Commando took to the streets protesting over housing and service delivery.

Traffic disruptions were caused throughout the morning due to barricaded roads and burning of tyres in the streets.

Ward councillor Basil Douglas and Dan Bovu MMC for Housing were present to address the residents but according to the residents he (Bovu) promised to give them free housing but did not deliver.

Douglas said that authorities should get their priorities straight.

“The people have a right to react because they were promised housing but did not receive it.

“Top level government should listen to the people’s complaints because protests become violent and people get hurt,” said Douglas.

A meeting will be held tomorrow to discuss a way forward according to Douglas.
