Botched circumcision at Baragwanath

Doctor allegedly cuts off tip of penis off of a 10 year old boy during circumcision.

A doctor at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital allegedly cut off the tip of a 10-year-old boy’s penis during a botched circumcision procedure over a week ago.

Apparently, when the father arrived at the hospital, the boy had already been bandaged.

The boy now urinates through a urinary catheter and he’s been spending eight days in hospital thus far.

Gauteng Department of Health spokesman Steve Mabona said in a statement that the department had successfully spoken to the family of the child and that they were happy with the explanation from the department.

“The child’s unfortunate setback was clinically rectified, he is currently receiving medical attention and he will definitely heal and function normally.

“He should be discharged in due course.

“It is unfortunate that the sad incident took place however, it is important to indicate that this was an isolated case,” said Mabona.

Mabona said the department had arranged counselling for the family.

Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health Jack Bloom said he is horrified at the event.

“We need to know why this happened and what steps have been taken to discipline the doctor concerned.

“Circumcisions by qualified doctors need to be encouraged but this incident could scare people from having what should be a safe operation.

“There should not be any secrecy about what has happened in this case and we need assurance that it will never happen again,” said Bloom.

The father also commented saying he wants an apology before they can speak about closure.
