Tireless planning leads to successful homecoming

Team works endlessly to have residents meet Miss SA.

Eldorado Park and surrounding areas came to a standstill on Sunday for the homecoming of Miss South Africa, Liesl Laurie.

An event initiated by residents and run by the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) allowed for residents to see a gleaming Laurie as she was driven through the community.

Working until early morning hours, the LDAC planned the event in less than a week ensuring the event would run smoothly.

“We had one or two mishaps like the stadium not being available at the last minute but we had an awesome event,” LDAC chairperson Cheryl Pillay said.

The homecoming was described as the biggest for a Miss SA and gathered the biggest crowd for any event in Eldos.

The team gave out over 20 000 posters which could be seen along the entire route that Laurie travelled.

“I salute the team that went beyond their line of duty to ensure this was a success.

“We also salute the community for their support, this event was for them,” Pillay said.

The event was also supported, at short notice, by various entities.

“A heartfelt thank you to the provincial department of sport and culture Ivor Hoff and director of cultural affairs for supporting our event on such short notice.

“We also thank Net care 911 and Chosen One’s Bikers for their contribution and Mark Martin and Eric Slaffa for the usage of their vehicles,” the event coordinator Dereleen James said.

“Most importantly a big thank you to the community for the unity and love they displayed, well done Eldos”.
