Maths no challenge for pupil

Nine-year-old Calsey Starkey will take part in the provincial round later in October.

Calsey Starkey, a nine-year-old Grade Three pupil from EW Hobbs Primary School will represent the district at provincial level in mental maths.

Starkey came out on top throughout eliminating rounds earning her a place in, as the only representative from Eldorado Park and the district to qualify for provincial level.

“I love maths because I can play with numbers,” Starkey said.

Participants are required to do addition, subtraction, multiply and divide without the use of a calculator within a time frame.

Starkey said the competition was easy.

Her teacher, Yolande Keet spent hours after school training and practising number combination.

“The sums get more difficult throughout each level and the time is shortened, we had to practise on keeping within the time frame,” Keet said.

Principal of EW Hobbs, Cecil Christian said he is proud of Starkey.

“As a school we are very proud of her and our hope is that she goes from strength to strength.

“This is one of those cases where a child rises above social ills, she is an example that children can achieve from a young age,” Christian said.

Starkey said to achieve one should work hard.

“Think before you write and work hard,” she said.
