Schools celebrate democracy through art

Eldos schools commemorate 20 years of democracy.

Schools in Eldos competed against each other, on Thursday, in a Pro Artes drama, speech, poetry and arts event.

In the arts category, pupils were required to create a 2D and 3D design around the theme 20 Years of Democracy.

Other themes were The Voice of Democracy, Freedom is Responsibility, Let’s talk and We Are One.

The Gauteng Department of Education initiated the Segarona to celebrate the diverse culture and heritage South Africa has to offer.

Serarona which means ‘Our Own’ promotes dialogue, human rights and anti-racism among teachers and pupils.

Of the 13 schools that participated, the following schools won prizes:

*Milnerton – Early Childhood Development (ECD) Formal Poetry, Grade four to six

*Cavendish – Formal poetry, dramatized poetry Grade four to six, art Grade four to six

*Boekenhout – Informal poetry ECD, Grade four to six, speech ECD, drama ECD

*Lanceavale – Informal poetry Grade seven to nine, art Grade 10 to 12

*Eldomaine – Informal poetry Grade 10 to 12, drama Grade 10 to 12

*Heerengracht – Dramatised poetry ECD

*Feed My Lambs – Dramatised poetry, drama Grade seven to nine, art seven to nine

*Firethorn – Speech Grade seven to nine

*St Ives – Speech Grade seven to nine, 2D art grade seven to nine

*Eldocrest – Drama Grade four to six

*Elridge – 2D art Grade four to six,
