‘Each one starts with one’

A foundation is aiming to make a positive difference in Eldos.

An organisation that was formed because of the social ills of Eldorado Park spent most of their Saturday at Andries Meyer Old Age Home.

The garden of the home was cleaned up and the home received a new sign.

The previous sign was erected 34 years ago.

“The home goes unnoticed and people don’t know how the elderly suffer.

“We want to revamp the home, starting with a new sign and cleaning it up outside to draw awareness to the place,” said Dwaine Ponsonby of One Foundation.

One Foundation was founded last year and was sparked by the ‘deterioration’ of Eldos, Peter Zocheus, chairman of the foundation said.

“We all grew up in Eldos and we see how things are deteriorating, as youngsters we want to do something positive for our community,” he said.

One Foundation wants to set a platform where resources of different organisations will be used under one umbrella.

“We are trying to do away with organisations that establish a brand, are elite and shine alone,” said Zocheus.

The foundation gathered volunteers from the community to assist in giving Andries Meyer Old Age Home a facelift and soup to the elderly.

One Foundation is working on starting a vegetable garden at the home.

“The home is very dependant on sponsorship, we want to make things easier for them,” Ponsonby said.

They will be hosting a jazz event on March 29 to raise funds to build a wall around the premises.

“People steal from Andries Meyer Old Age Home, there are times when they are without water or electricity.

“The wall with provide more security for the elderly,” Zocheus said.

The jazz session will start at 10am and entry is R20.
