Carnival comes to town

Sport and Recreation in conjunction with Arts and Culture will be hosting the regional carnival to be held at Westbury Recreation Centre, Westbury Oval and surrounding streets.

The theme of the Gauteng Carnival is informed by the need to mobilize all creative arts sectors of society, particularly the youth, towards social cohesion and skills development.

Joburg will represent West Africa and Region B will represent Liberia with the spirit element “Love”.

The objectives are:

• To mobilize young people and society in general to form part of the Carnival either as participants or spectators.

• To encourage dialogue, debates, discussions and conversations about the African legacy within our communities.

• To highlight the relevance of the cultural diversity and showcasing various cultures within the communities of Joburg.

• To link young artists to existing and potential job opportunities within the City.

• To foster partnerships with relevant stakeholders for the purpose of broadening meaningful participation in youth development and social cohesion programmes.

• To celebrate the African legacy and showcase Joburg and the greater Gauteng as the preferred home for refugees and migrant workers who come to seek job opportunities.
