This past Thursday, residents from Zamaimpilo Informal settlement and other communities around Johannesburg, protested for the lack of housing deliveries from government and was supported by the South African Communist Party (SACP).
The protest started in the west of Joburg and continued to the CBD to the mayor’s office and the Department of Housing to handover a memorandum of demands from different communities.
The demonstration saw around 10 000 protesters, who were protesting against illegal evictions, water and electricity.

“Our demands that we handed over related to housing delivery for our people,” said Lucien Segami spokesperson of the SACP.
Some of the demands in the memorandum were related to the housing, water, electricity and sanitation which residents don’t receive.
“Some of the residents have never received these services from government and this is why we had a demonstration to the Department of housing, to handover our memorandum of demands,” said Segami.
“Protesters are calling out the corruption happening in the housing department,” said Segami.
There were a few injuries that happened during the demonstration but this happened at the train station where people were entering and exiting the trains.
“We have given government 48 hours to respond to our demands,” said Segami.
