Community Policing Forum needs more members

The Moroka Community Policing Forum (CPF) is asking residents to volunteer their time and services to the police station so they can work together with the police in fighting crime.

The Moroka Community Policing Forum (CPF) is asking residents to volunteer their time and services to the police station so they can work together with the police in fighting crime.

These volunteers are needed in all the seven sectors of the Moroka policing area.

Chairperson of the CPF, Elijah Tsokodibane said that the police cannot patrol this entire area alone and need the help of residents to create safer communities.

Tsokodibane said: “People who are interested in joining us must know that this job is on a volunteer basis.

“We also need to have street committees in each street to manage crime better and quicker in each area.

“Senior citizens are best as street committee members and people who are 55-year-old or less can patrol as we need people who are fit for that job.”

In addition to working with the residents and police, the CPF team also works with the station management to discuss challenges they face, crime and suggestions of action plans since they are regarded as the go between for residents and the police.

“Other work we do is that daily we deal with residents who come to the station with different cases and we engage with them and advise them on places that they can go to for help.

“We also have trauma centre which does referrals to various organisations or helps residents with problems and assists them with opening cases if necessary.

“Then there are patrollers who have been deployed in schools while others continue working on streets,” he said.

Tsokodibane encouraged residents to use their sector vehicles which operate 24 hours to assist them.

Residents who are interested in joining the CPF can go to room 526 at the Moroka Police Station, on Monday to Fridays between 9am to 3pm or they can call 011 527 0112.
