Soweto pays tribute to Dr Maponya
Dr Maponya was more than a businessman to Sowetans.
As the country prepares for Dr. Richard Maponya’s funeral, Sowetans gathered at the iconic Maponya Mall today to honor and celebrate the well-lived life of Ntate Maponya.
A lot of great things were said about Dr. Maponya at the event, however, what stood out was what Sowetans had to say about the mark he left.
It seemed, to most Sowetans, Dr. Maponya was more than just a businessman, but he was like a father, a mentor, an icon, an inspiration, and a provider.
Speaking at the event, the Ward 22 Councilor Elizabeth Mabaso said that Dr. Maponya has led to Sowetan’s great legacy, and that is Maponya Mall.
“We have benefited a lot from this mall, we feel so much spoilt because the mall is really like a jewel at the back of our yards. It’s like Ntate Maponya brought Sandton to Soweto,” said Mabaso.

The Nancefield Community Leader, Teacher Shange, also expressed how Dr. Maponya has made a difference in his life and opened doors for blacks in business.
Dr. Maponya’s funeral service will be held at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Soweto Campus tomorrow.
