Academy Awards at Riverlea Primary School

Riverlea Primary School’s honours day had the theme ‘Day at the Oscars’

Riverlea Primary School’s honours day had the theme ‘Day at the Oscars’ on November 28 at the Riverlea Recreation Centre. It was all red carpet, stars, trophies and all the glitz and glam that comes with the ‘Oscars’.

The day was for all the top achievers in Grade 4 to Grade 7 and parents were also invited to share the proud moment. The guest speaker for the day was Lee Peters who is a pilot for South African Airways.

According to educator Candace Berry, Peters is from Bosmont and went abroad to Australia to complete his studies. “He is one of us, he came from our community and he made it,” added Berry.

Peters shared: “Everyone always asks me if I can put on that pilot voice and I tell them that I probably cannot and I probably don’t even look like a pilot but that is just it, we have to break these barriers, we need to believe in ourselves. For many people who made it in life, started with a dream, you have to have a dream. I started dreaming when I was playing for the Bosmont Football Association (BFL) when after playing soccer I laid on the grass and looked up seeing a plane flying over. That is where the spark started and then you have to work towards it. With dedication and hard work anything can be achieved.”

There was a short question and answer session with Peters and the learners. Principal Marcelle Elephant came to the stage to hand over a gift to Peters.

“To the teachers, you have outdone yourselves today, to the children, the teachers went out of their way to honour you and today is all about you. Today, we honour your achievements and please do not take for granted the value that a teacher has in your life. I think teaching is the only profession where you can create doctors, pilots, carpenters and so on, everyone who has achieved something in life has been through a teacher.

I want to thank the learners for the hard work that they have displayed this year. If you have the right attitude in life, you are guaranteed to be successful. The next thing is that nothing comes easy in life, the world owes you nothing, for everything that you want to achieve in this world you need to work hard,” said principal Elephant.

A light snack was served to the learners as well as their parents who attended the awards ceremony.
