Parents are also advised to visit their nearest Central District office for further assistance with the online admissions and placement system.

The Gauteng Education Department has once again extended the deadline for learner placements to November 30, 2019. This follows several challenges faced by both parents and the Department with the online system.

The initial date for closing had been set at October 30, 2019, however with 58 926 learns unplaced by the 1st of November and 9712 of the 58 926 unplaced applicants having not accepted offers, Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lefufi has decided to extend the deadline.

“We remain hopeful that we will conclude this process (learner placement) by the 30th of November. Please be assured that no learner will be without a school,” Lesufi said via his Twitter account.

The department has encountered several challenges with the process of placement. Statistics show that of the 18253 learners who had applied to one school, only 1007 applicants were eligible for placement.

Additionally, the department found that 396 schools in Gauteng have a higher number of unplaced learners than available spaces.

There are certainly signs of progress being made. As of 12 November, the department recorded that there were 25 082 applicants unplaced and the number is declining.

The department has also strategized a plan of action to fast track the process. According to the information posted by Lesufi.

A list of all the addresses of unplaced learners will be sent to the EMIS team so that they can identify the feeder schools of unplaced learners. The normal process that has been used will continue for schools that have the capacity and a list.

On the 15th MEC Panyaza Lesufi met with parents formations to resolve the placement of learners through the online system.

“We remain hopeful that all learners, particularly all Grade 1 learners will be placed by next week. We have reduced the waiting list from 34000 to almost 9000,” Lesufi said.

Parents are also advised to visit their nearest Central District office for further assistance with the online admissions and placement system.
