Pimville cyclist jets off to Switzerland

Pimville born Benedict Moqumo (20) will be flying to Switzerland to go and compete with other cyclists from all over the world.

Cycling in Soweto is growing and becoming a popular sporting activity, especially for youth. From just an amateur, cycling in the streets of Soweto, to an exceptional young cyclist, with big dreams in the sport.

Pimville born Benedict Moqumo (20)’s cycling career is very promising and this Friday, October 11, he will be flying to Switzerland to go and compete with other cyclists from all over the world, not only representing Soweto but South Africa as a whole.

Moqumo is a qualified Electrical Engineer and has participated in a few other sports, but cycling is seemingly the one that stood out for him because he always wanted to do something unique. He started cycling when he was in Grade 7 and has also participated in the African Track Championship.

“I started as an amateur, cycling alone, and a few months later, I met a man called Oupa Maluleke, who helped me take my cycling career further and it was through him that I managed to get my foot at the door of professional cycling. As time went on, I met some of the prominent cyclists who are currently contributing in my career,” Moqumo said.

Moqumo is currently under Van Wyk’s Electrical Track Academy (VWE) which is the brainchild of Martin Van Wyk, who aims to bring track racing back to the level that it was in the 80`s.

“VWE has contributed so much in my cycling career, it was through them that I was able to get the necessary equipment, they have introduced me to the life of travelling, they were the first people to take me to Durban, the first to take me to Cape Town, and most importantly, they introduced me to most track racing competition,” he said.

“Then I met South Africa’s professional racing cyclist, Jean Spies and Bridgette, these are the two people who changed my perspective in cycling, they introduced me to international racing and they are the ones who are assisting me with this trip to Switzerland, which I am very excited about, it is one of the biggest highlights of my career, as it will open doors for me,” he added.

Moqumo has participated in many competitions and has some medals to show off. Every sport has some life lessons and Moqumo said that cycling has taught him to be punctual, to have integrity, be patient as well as being respectful.

“It is through the sport that I have become a responsible young man. My biggest dream is to participate in the world Olympics,” he concludes.
