Students from South West Gauteng Technical and Vocational Education and Training College hosted a march against gender-based violence and femicide. The students embarked on a peaceful march to Orlando Police Station to submit a memorandum.

During the march, students donned signs that spoke out against violence and femicide. Their message was simple; abuse can never be love, no respect for abusers, real men protect women and children and enough is enough.

The principal of the Soweto West Gauteng College Dan Nkosi said the gender-based violence has lately affected the students and women in South Africa. He said that females and children should be respected, protected and enough is enough.

“Our females and children should be protected, respected and now is the time that men should support and protect women. We need to expose these men who are raping and killing women and children.”

He stated that they took part in the march to stand up and fight for women and children. Nkosi mentioned that about 80% of students who enrolled in the institutions have a chance of being raped before they could complete a three-year course.

“In August one of our student leaders was raped in the academic conference. The sad part is that perpetrators of rape are significant people, powerful people and people like ourselves.”

“The colleges should have a hotline to call when feeling unsafe because we are not safe in colleges and our homes. We need panic buttons on campus or security guards all over the campus so that the students will feel free,” said Nompendulo Mkhatshwa who is a student.
