Glen Ridge primary school to take a stand against GBV

The school along with its learners will engage the community with a 5km walk, which they believe is an act of protecting women and children against abuse on October 19 at 07:00.

As the country mourns for the women and children who have lost their lives in the hands of their fellow citizens, Glen Ridge primary school in partnership with Teddy Bear Clinic, which aims at giving victims a support system by offering support services.

Teddy Bear Clinic is one of the few organisations that provide holistic integrated services to children that have been abused and are living in abusive environments. The organisation helps by giving a second chance to victims by offering them counselling and preventing them from becoming potential offenders.

This is to create awareness in the community, “we believe that together we can be the voice of change in our community and country in large” said Tshepi Diamond, an SGB member at Glen Ridge Primary School. “Gender-based violence stops girls from reaching their potential, we are working on transforming attitudes towards girls and women that perpetuate violence against them,” she added.

The school believes that by fighting against women and children abuse, there are solutions that can unlock the change that they hope to see in their community and nation as a whole. The safe school awareness program, sexual violence initiative and support for abused children are all part of the solutions that the school has put forward to tackle this national problem.

The walk will start at the school gate whereby fruit, water and juice will be supplied to all participants. For security reasons, SAPS and JMPD members will be available. The school address is as follows: 16724 Alfonso Street, Protea Glen Ext 16.
