Drunken driving arrests leap from 790 to 1 101 in August JMPD performance stats

The release of the monthly JMPD performance statistics ensures that the JMPD can hold itself accountable.

On September 26, the August performance statistics by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) were released, revealing the continued efforts by the City to curb growing crime trends that continue to affect our residents and businesses.

The release of the monthly JMPD performance statistics ensures that the JMPD can hold itself accountable.

These statistics are also shared with the residents of Johannesburg. Drunk driving operations remain in full force as the number of arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol has increased substantially.

In terms of the Top 6 crime types across all regions, the JMPD in August made:
1.    1 101 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol (790 in July)
2.    35 for hijacked or stolen motor vehicles (27 in July)
3.    34 for possession of unlicensed firearms (14 in July)
4.    13 for common robbery (17 in July)
5.    12 for assault (7 in July)
6.    11 for stolen goods (13 in July)

In addition, the recent national crime statistics reveal a growing trend of crime across the country that has seen criminals hold our people at ransom. It is for this reason that I have advocated for and launched Operation Buya Mthetho early in 2018.

This programme has enhanced the City’s fight against criminal elements and lawlessness pervading our communities, hampering much-needed economic growth. It is because of these efforts that the City has been able to trace the unlawful use of City services that are not being paid for, hindering the City’s ability to deliver services. The latest example is the property on which the Sandton Gautrain Station is situated.

The City was left with no option but to cut off the water supply at the Sandton Gautrain Station following extensive efforts to get the landowner, Ceder Park, to pay its R8 million debt. The debt is for outstanding property rates as well as water, refuse, and sewerage services.

More of these cut-offs can be expected as efforts to collect an outstanding debt are intensified through Operation Buya Mthetho. Furthermore, the launch of the Integrated Intelligence Operation centre (IIOC) Reaction Unit earlier this year has resulted in a significant decrease in response time and several arrests of perpetrators for armed robberies, theft, rape, and attempted murder specifically in the inner city of Johannesburg have been made.

In August, this unit managed to arrest 69 suspects, recover five firearms, and 15 hijacked or stolen motor vehicles. Mayor Herman Mashaba said: “I wish to reiterate that without the cooperation of the SAPS, Hawks, and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), crime in Johannesburg and South Africa will continue unabated.”

“The multi-party government is prepared to work hand-in-hand with all law-abiding residents to make Johannesburg a safer city where businesses can thrive and help grow the economy.”

“We will do so with an additional complement of 1, 500 new JMPD officers, who will be ready for active duty in the coming months. At the moment, the City has between 700 and 800 officers on patrol at any one time but our crime-fighting and by-law enforcement capabilities will improve vastly when the new cohort of police officers begin their duties.”

“I would like to remind residents to use the correct reporting channels when reporting the crime. This will ensure that we can deploy our resources timeously and effectively.”

Residents can report illegal activities to the following numbers:
· Anti-Corruption Hotline: 0800 203 712;
· Traffic Management Hotline: 080 872 3342;
· JMPD Emergency number: 011 375 5911 / 011 758 9620; and
· Illegal Dumping: 082 779 1361 (WhatsApp or SMS along with clear photos).
