350 bicycles distributed to learners from three different schools around Soweto

The Executive Director of Qubheka, Tsatsi Phaweni said that the program was inspired by realising the need of children to get to school.

Qubheka in partnership with Volkswagen hosted a program that aimed at providing school pupils with bicycles so they can use to go to and from school, especially those that live far from the school premises and have no mode of transport.

The Executive Director of Qubheka, Tsatsi Phaweni said that the program was inspired by realising the need of children to get to school and what they are looking to achieve and solve with the program is to elucidate for scholar mobility and to limit the distance that a child has to walk to get to school and access education, that is the whole idea behind the program.

“We distributed 350 bicycles to learners from three different schools around Soweto being Lofentse Girls High, Orlando High School and Bona Comprehensive School, we didn’t specifically choose a grade that will be provided with the bicycles they were mixed grades from 8,9,10 and 11, stated Phaweni.

“The challenges we face is that the bicycles tend to get stolen and safety on the roads, they can be overcome by having awareness campaigns and to get other road users to accommodate cyclists,” concluded the Executive director.

Government sales consultant,Phumzile Mthembu mentioned that Volkswagen has a banner called Volkswagen For Good and through it they have partnered with Qubheka to provide mobility because they believe in moving people forward and giving learners the gift of time so that they can focus on other things instead of the long commit that normally comes with them having to go to school.

Lofentse Girls High teacher, Makhwezi Mekeni said that the idea is very good because it helps learners get to school on time, they won’t have a reason for being late anymore.

“This bicycle will help me get to school on time and it will also be safer because accidents often happen to those walking to and from school,” alluded Michael Malwande a learner from Bona Comprehensive School.
